The Solution: Go Local, Go Real
Truestock: A Game-Changer
As an agency, we’ve been increasingly turning to Truestock as our starting point for authentic New Zealand imagery and for good reason.
Truestock works with over 150 talented photographers and videographers across Aotearoa, creating fresh, authentic stock content that captures a diverse and multicultural New Zealand. Their library currently features more than 60,000 local images and video footage, with new content added daily.
What sets them apart:
- No AI-generated imagery — everything is shot by real photographers, capturing real moments
- Authentically New Zealand — from multicultural workplaces to everyday family moments, these images actually look like us
- Ethical payment model — everyday Kiwis involved in photoshoots are paid regardless of whether the image sells, and contributors are becoming co-owners of the platform
- Cost-effective — royalty-free images start from $40, with exclusive licenses available on request and 20% discounts for non-profits
We asked CEO and co-founder of Truestock, Tanmay Desai, how the New Zealand market is responding to having a local photo library available.
“The response to having local, diverse and authentic representation through our stock library has been extremely positive. The constant feedback we get from government bodies, charities and creative agencies alike is the way our imagery resonates locally.
“Clients really do appreciate the often subtle cues that make the images and videos instantly feel local and form a real connection with their audience.”
What changes or trends have you been noticing over the last 6 months or so in terms of how the site is being used etc?
“With such a diverse client base, it’s hard to pick trends. We have consistently seen demand across lifestyle imagery where everyday people are seen doing everyday things.
“One aspect to note in the last six months is that we are reminding our clients that use in political applications falls under ‘Restricted Use’. This being an election year, we just want to make sure we protect our models so they don’t come across as personally endorsing a political party. Being local and closely connected with our content creators and models, gives us even more impetus for closely monitoring sales and making sure everyone is protected, including clients. Something we do all year round.
“We take ethical production and proper use of our content seriously – something I was invited to discuss on RNZ.” Tanmay said.
Custom Photography: The Gold Standard
As good as Truestock is, if you have the budget for it, there’s no substitute for commissioning your own photoshoot.
When you need imagery that’s perfectly aligned with your brand and your specific context, custom photography is the way to go.
And if you don’t have the budget, perhaps there is someone on your team who is handy with their iphone or camera and can take some original images for you to use.
In any case, we highly recommend ensuring you have your own photography to keep track of the work you do, the services you offer and to have content for your digital channels that is timely and relevant. Once again, people are searching for authentic images – so the more often you can include yourself or team members in the images (they don’t have to be smiling at the camera!) the more authentic they will be.
A Quick Checklist for Choosing Authentic Imagery
Before you select an image for your website or socials, ask:
- Does it look like New Zealand? Would anyone mistake this for a photo taken overseas?
- Are the details right? Check appliances, light switches, plumbing, tools, uniforms, materials.
- Does it feel “real”? Or does it have that slightly-off, AI-generated quality?
- Would someone in the industry recognise this as authentic? Particularly important for trade, construction, and property sectors.
- Is it culturally appropriate? If featuring people, does it reflect the diversity of Aotearoa?
- Could this image be mistaken for a scam site? Generic, overly polished, or “wrong” imagery often signals a lack of legitimacy.
The Bottom Line
Authenticity in imagery is no longer a nice-to-have. It’s a competitive advantage and a trust signal that consumers are actively looking for.
In an era of AI-generated everything, realness stands out. The brands that invest in authentic, locally-sourced imagery will build trust. Those that cut corners with generic, irrelevant, inaccurate or obviously AI-generated visuals will look like they don’t care or worse, like they might not be legitimate at all.
Our approach? We start with Truestock for authentic Kiwi imagery. We commission custom photography where we need something specific. We check the details obsessively. And we never, ever let an AI-generated image represent a client’s brand without rigorous human oversight.
Because in 2026, the most valuable currency in marketing isn’t clicks. It’s trust.
